A video on the invasion of the revered palace of the traditional ruler of Twon Brass in Bayelsa State has emerged on Wednesday.
In the 43-second video which is currently trending in some circles, angry youths broke into the palace of King Alfred Diette-Spiff, a first class monarch and first military governor of old- Rivers State, with clubs, missiles and other dangerous weapons as they viciously vandalized properties.
Diette-Spiff, the hitherto influential traditional ruler of Twon Brass, hosts to Agip’s Crude Export Terminal, reportedly fled his palace on Wednesday, May 19, as protests against a lingering power outage in the community turned violent.
Reports indicate that Diette-Spiff had addressed the protesters and urged them to disperse and leave the premises of Agip, as discussions with the oil firm to resolve the dispute continued in Port Harcourt.
The aggrieved community members, who had blocked access to the oil firm’s offices, shunned the appeal by the traditional ruler, and became restive and hauled missiles at him, as he was immediately whisked off the scene to avert further violence.
Mr. Edward Edison, Youth President of Twon Brass said the timely intervention of the youths and armed security personnel deployed to the oil firm had doused the situation, though a 24-year-old was shot in the process.
He said King Diette-Spiff had to leave the community in a hurry to avert escalation of the situation as the residents vowed to remain in the premises of Agip until power was restored.
However, on Wednesday, May 26, some irate youths were captured on video vandalizing the monarch’s palace.
