It was a horrible end for four female traders hawking their wares on the Upper Iweka flyover in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, where a truck crushed them to death at about 7.30am on Wednesday.
Andrew Kumapayi, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, said the crash involved a blue Mercedes Benz truck with registration number XF259UNZ. The driver of the vehicle, who is reportedly in police custody had yet to be identified as of the time of filing this report.
“Eyewitness reports reaching us indicate that the truck driver had a disagreement with revenue collectors on Upper Iweka Flyover and the truck rolled back and crushed four female hawkers along the road”, Kumapiya said.
He added: “The driver of the truck and his motor boy came out without injury. The FRSC rescue team, along with some officers of the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force, rushed the victims to Toronto Hospital in Onitsha and deposited their bodies at the morgue after doctors on duty confirmed their death”.
