No fewer than 45 suspects detained in a cell at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the Adamawa State police command have escaped from custody.
Impeccable sources hinted Scudnews that the suspects who were held in a detention facility tagged ‘Cell 2’ at the SCID located within the headquarters of the state police command, violently broke the locks and escaped on Sunday night.
It was learnt that that the suspects who were arrested for various criminal offences, might have plotted the cell break ahead before the execution at about 8.pm on Sunday, May 9.
Reports indicated that the incident occurred while policemen deployed on night duty were undertaking the routine handing and taking over process, with the Charge Room Officer (CRO) identified as Inspector Kikisu Kenan, caught off guard.
Sources said while the policemen were still handing and taking over, the suspects in the cell started chanting Allah Akhabar, before violently breaking the cell and escaped, knocking down the cell guard in the process.
It was further gathered that all the 45 suspects in the cell escaped, leading to a swift manhunt by a combined team of police operatives.
When contacted, the state police commissioner, Aliyu Adamu Alhaji, said he was at a committee meeting and could not respond to enquiries. “I am in a meeting now; there is a committee and I am busy right now. Please call me later”, he said on telephone.
However, a senior police officer who craved anonymity confirmed the incident. He however said 27 of the escapee suspects have been rearrested, while 18 are still at large.
