6 Escapee Inmates Return to Owerri Custodial Centre As Security Operatives Launch Manhunt for Others

Operatives of various security agencies have launched a manhunt for inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) facility in Owerri, Imo State, which came under attack in the wee hours of Monday.

At least 1, 844 inmates were confirmed by the NCS authorities to have escaped from custody during the attack.

Spokesperson for the Service, Francis Enobore, said in a statement on Tuesday, that the search and recover operation for the fleeing inmates is being undertaken in conjunction with other security agencies.

“As at the last count, six inmates have so far voluntarily returned to the facility while 35 inmates refused to escape from custody during the attack”, according to Enobore.

He said the Acting Controller-General of the NCS, Mr. John Mrabure, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident that occurred at the Owerri Custodial Centre.

Gunmen had stormed the facility at about 02:15hrs on Monday April 5, and gained access into the premises by using explosives.
