Local rescue workers battled emotions as they pulled out the charred remains of an 80-year-old man and a granny, aged 70, from the rubbles of an inferno which gutted a settlement inhabited mostly by internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria.

The Octogenarian, Yakubu Kachallaram, and grandma Yabintu Bunu, died gruesomely in the blazing fire which occurred on Tuesday, February 16, and raged for hours at the Gubio Wango ward in Gubio Local Government Area of the state, reports said.

Scudnews learnt that about 120 thatch-roofed houses and properties estimated at millions of naira were consumed by the fire which started at about 12.45pm.

Joint efforts by the locals, police, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and soldiers, eventually extinguished the fire after it had reportedly caused severe damage.

The cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained, but the police said an investigation is ongoing.
