The Akwa Ibom Executive Council has approved the construction of Mkpat Enin-Ikot Ubo and Ikot Ntot-Nkikara roads in Mkpat Enin and Ikot Abasi Local Government Areas of the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Ini Ememobong, stated this on Friday after the state executive council meeting in Uyo.
Ememobong said contracts for the 10.519km roads were awarded to Gitto Construction Company and expected to be completed in 18 months period.
He said the approval followed a memo presented by the Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Professor Eno Ibanga.
The commissioner said the state government had also approved the immediate rehabilitation of Idua road in Eket Local Government Area.
“The executive council has mandated the Commissioner for Environment and Solid Minerals and his Works and Fire Service counterpart to take immediate steps to curtail the existing environmental threat in the state and prevent future occurrences,’’ he said.
He said the executive council had fixed Sept. 18 as the state Coconut Day when at least 300,000 seedlings would be planted as a part of the coconut revolution agenda of the state government.
The commissioner also said that the Governor Udom Emmanuel had appreciated the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) Visitation Panel for its report.
Ememobong added that the governor had referred the report to the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet, for immediate implementation.
He said the state executive council had insisted that candidates for admission into the Junior Secondary 1 in Akwa Ibom must attain the age of 12.
The commissioner also said that those above that age seeking admission must have their parents or guardians sign undertakings of their good behaviour.
