Borno Varsity Workers Will Join Unions — VC

The Vice Chancellor of newly established Borno State University (BOSU), Professor Umar Sandabe, on Wednesday said the institution would allow its staff members to join workers’ unions.

Sandabe gave the assurance in Maiduguri while recieving officials of Borno chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who paid him a courtesy visit. He said merger of the university with Borno College Education increased the number of staff, making it necessary to allow them to belong to any union of their choice.

The vice-chancellor thanked the NLC leadership for the visit, saying his administration appreciated the role of labour unions in the development of institutions. “This administration remains committed to staff development and welfare.”

He commended Borno chapter of the NLC for displaying maturity in handling labour matters, adding that his administration would always seek advice from the NLC. Earlier, the NLC Chairman, Mr Bulama Abiso, lauded the cordial relationship between the management and staff of the university.

Bulama said the NLC team was in the institution to thank the vice-chancellor for an active role in the successful celebration of Workers Day in the state.

Abiso also lauded Sandabe for achievements as the pioneer vice-chancellor of the university which started in 2019 with 700 students, four faculties and more than 30 courses.

Abiso assured the VC, of NLC’s support and cooperation at all times, adding that the university was large enough to accommodate unionism which, he said, played a vital role in the management of any organisation.
