Barely aged 10, a boy on a voyage of discovery shattered the peace of a neighbourhood in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, when he shot and killed his seven-year-old younger sibling while playing with his father’s Dane gun.
The incident which occurred at about 9.30pm on Thursday, February 11, threw residents into bewilderment more so, as the children’s father was said to be away from home when tragedy struck.
Kinko Daniel was oblivious of the lethal effect of a gun when he pointed the nozzle close to his sister, Grace Daniel, while playing with the weapon. He reportedly misfired and the bullets hit his sibling.
Doctors at the General Hospital Akwanga battled with death to save her life, but she couldn’t make it. She died moments after being admitted at the hospital’s intensive care unit.
It could not be ascertained at press time whether Kinko, a minor, would face a charge of culpable homicide, but the Nasarawa State police command has said efforts were ongoing to arrest the suspect.
Nansel Ramhan, an Assistant Superintendent of Police and spokesperson for the state police command did not respond to calls put across his mobile phone, but a senior police officer who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the incident.
This is coming just as a 17-year-old boy whose name was simply given as Osaro, reportedly died in Edo State after a locally made gun he hid in his pocket exploded and burst his testicles.
Reports said Osaro had, at the weekend, taken a walk on the streets of Ayen, a rural community in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State, with a short gun tucked in his pocket, when it suddenly went off. He died on the spot.
Scudnews learnt that arms-bearing is a common among youths of the community due to perennial communal clashes by Ayen neighbouring Owegie community.
