Face to face with death, a young woman with a charming smile exhibited a rare feat of bravery when she came under attack by a rapist in an ambush under the cover of darkness.
With a gun pointed to her head, Ms. Regina Yamtair was captured at night on Friday, May 3, by an alleged daredevil rapist she could recognise and dragged into a bush along the University of Agriculture Road, close to Agro Mills in the North Bank district of Makurdi, Benue State.
Time was 9.20pm and she was returning home from a church programme when she walked into danger.
But her 23-year-old assailant, Gabriel Ioryer, got a shocker when he was set to rape her inside the bush after successfully dispossessing her of a Tecno phone valued N20, 000 and a sum of N8, 000 in cash.
Ioryer, who thought he had subdued his victim reportedly, dropped the pistol in preparation to forcefully have canal knowledge of his prey but the unexpected happened.
With the speed of lightening, Regina grabbed the gun and flung it further into the bush before engaging him in a fight that paved way for her escape.
Out of peril unscathed, she reported her near-fatal encounter to the police at the C Division, Makurdi and a team of detectives was drafted to comb the crime scene the next day.
The search yielded result as a locally made pistol and one live cartridge were recovered by the police from the scene, a source familiar with the case told Scudnews on Thursday.
It was further learnt that Ioryer, the alleged daredevil who perpetrated the act has been arrested by the police.

She was driving a Mercedes-Benz 230 bearing number plate AZ 965 ENU on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 when the robbers accosted her.
In an attempt to scare her stiff and force her to a halt, they broke the windshield on the driver’s side of the car and pointed a gun at her. But she bravely maneuvered the vehicle on full throttle and had a lucky escape.
In the process, the robber who pointed the gun at her ostensibly had his hand twisted and had to drop the weapon inside the car to save his life.
The woman who did not notice the gun had been dropped in her car, raced to a police checkpoint at Arab Contractors along the Enugu-Port Harcourt road, with the robbers in a hot chase before they eventually disappeared when they realized the pursuit was no longer safe.
When policemen at the checkpoint examined the car after hearing her perplexing tale, they found a Titan pistol bearing number 249539 loaded with two live ammunition.
