Coronavirus: Top Kidney Specialist in Kenya Succumbs to Virus

Kenya has lost a top kidney specialist to coronavirus as the number of doctors succumbing to the virus increases.

Dr. Anthony Omollo, who passed on Saturday, was also head of the renal unit at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, the biggest referral hospital in East Africa.

Five other specialist doctors have succumbed to the deadly disease.

Professionals in the healthcare sector, particularly those in the frontline in fighting the pandemic, are a worried lot. The pandemic has claimed the lives of 31 specialists.

Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council (KMPDU) on Saturday confirmed the death of the kidney specialist. He was also president of the African Association of Nephrology and Deputy Director of the East African Kidney Institute.

Dr. Omollo is reported to have succumbed to the virus while undergoing treatment at a city hospital where he had been re-admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).

KPMDU last week issued a strike notice which lapses on December 6, 2020.

Healthcare workers are blaming the government for failure to provide the medics with adequate personal protection equipment.

On Saturday, Kenya recorded 1,340 fatalities while the number of pandemic cases stood at 75,193. (PANA)
