Germany said it registered no fewer than 80,000 COVID-19 infections in one day for the first time, according to figures released on Wednesday by the country’s national disease control agency.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 80,430 new infections within a 24-hour period, up by more than 21,500 cases from a week before.

The seven-day incidence has also increased nationwide, although data was still considered incomplete after the Christmas and New Year holidays led to fewer tests being carried out and fewer cases being reported.

The RKI said 407.5 cases had been registered per 100,000 residents over a one-week period, compared to 387.9 a day earlier. A week ago the nationwide incidence was 258.6.

The RKI reported a daily death toll of 384, up from 346 the previous week.

So far, 114,735 people have died in Germany after contracting COVID-19.
