After a two-month probe, the Judicial Panel of Inquiry investigating alleged cases of police brutality and other related extrajudicial acts by the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other police units in Niger State, has submitted its report to Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello, with a disclosure of impunity and insubordination in the police.
”In the course of our two months sitting, we saw the good, the bad and the best of the personnel of Nigerian police. The panel discovered that there is insubordination and impunity among the rank and file of the police”, chairman of the 14-member panel, Ishaku Usman, told the governor while submitting the report.
”We recommend that virtues of empathy and sympathy should be inculcated into the curriculum and training of personnel of the police force”, he added. Usman said the panel received 17 petitions, 53 witnesses and 50 exhibits.
While commending the chairman and members of the panel for doing a good job, the governor urged the Federal government to prioritize welfare of personnel and provision of adequate working equipment for the police to perform effectively.
