Lady Jane Nnamani, wife of a former Senate President, Senator Ken Nnamani, is battling to recover a cash sum of N26million which she reportedly kept in her home in Enugu, but was allegedly stolen by her domestic staff.

Following a complaint she lodged at about 11am on Sunday, November 29, the police in Enugu State arrested Izuchukwu Onah, her cleaner who was alleged to have admitted upon interrogation that he stole only a sum of N9million of the N25million which allegedly disappeared from the home.

Onah, the police further said, had confessed to sharing the N9million he allegedly admitted stealing with her cook, Hounsegan Luc, a national of Benin Republic.

The police said investigation was ongoing in the case which has set tongues wagging on how a whooping some of N25million was warehoused by the ex-senate president’s wife in her home rather than being deposited in a bank. But her husband, Senator Nnamani says there was no qualm with her keeping such an amount of money at home.

In a telephone interview with Scudnews on Saturday, Nnamani, who was president of the Senate between 2005 and 2007, emphasized that his wife owned the money she kept at home but was allegedly stolen, even as he queried, “so what do you want to do with the information, is your money missing?”

His words:   “So, what do you want to do with information? The money you said she kept at home; it is her own money. …I understand what you are saying, but the situation is such that I don’t think she kept the money for them to be taken. I will talk with her in detail about what transpired. She deals with big merchandise and there is cash movement over the decades; I don’t know the details on why she did not go to the bank to deposit the money.

But I am not surprised that such an amount could be found in her house; why not? Even more than that, depending on the business she is doing. If you are involved in wholesale trade in an area, it could be more than that.

However, when Scudnews notified him that he would be quoted in the report, the following dialogue ensued:

Scudnews: But sir, can we quote you?

Senator Nnamani: Please don’t quote me, don’t quote me; I will appreciate it if you are not quoting me. I am just imagining what could have happened.

Scudnews: In that case, can you link us to your wife so that we can have a voice if we are not quoting you?

Senator Nnamani: I am not afraid of your quoting me, if that is what you are driving at. You speak as if you are investigating the whole thing; is your own money missing?

Scudnews: But we are only trying to be professional; be objective by asking for clarification on the issue?

Senator Nnamani: I am in Abuja now, I am not in Enugu. Thank you.
