The Commander Guards Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Muhammed Usman has reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory and its environs of adequate security.
Usman gave the assurance during a media parley with Defence Correspondents on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said the Brigade, charged with the responsibility of securing the President and the seat of power as well as its environs was committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property within its areas of responsibility.
The Commander noted that the Parley became necessary and timely considering the current security happenings around Abuja and its environs and the vital roles the media play in ensuring a safe and secured society.
He said the parley which was held brief members of the press on the general security and recent happening in the FCT and the need for all hands to be on deck to ensure the safety of lives and properties.
He called on the media to remain committed to nation-building and partners in progress by ensuring that reports disseminated to the public were not only true but verified and confirmed.
According to him, fake news may cause apprehension and do more harm than good.
The commander further called on the society to support and trust the military through timely release of actionable intelligence which would, in turn, help the military and other security agencies to accomplish the task of securing and defending the society effectively.
He described the attack on the university of Abuja Staff Quarters as unfortunate, assuring that troops had been deployed on search and rescue operations to rescue the victims and apprehend the criminals.
On the current stop and search operation at Kugbo axis on Nyanya-Keffi expressway, Usman said the measure was borne out of the need to take proactive steps in preventing criminals from executing their plans.
He said that the current operation was being carried out based on credible intelligence on the possible security breaches, urging the commuters to bear with the military in the quest to secure them.
Also, the various units commanders such as the Commander Guards Brigade Garrison, Lt.-Col. Joshua Okwoli, Commanding Officer 7 Guards Battalion, Lt.-Col. Salim Hassan and Brigade Chief of Staff, Lt.-Col. Rilwan Bello all took turns to assure of their commitment to securing FCT.
They stated that officers and men of the Brigade were currently on the field across the territory to ensure that there was no security breach.
The commanders also called on all citizens to support the security agencies through timely and actionable information.
