Rivers State commissioner of police, Joseph Mukan, has dismissed as ridiculous and unfortunate, insinuations that the officers who invaded the residence of a former acting managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to arrest her on Thursday, were there without the knowledge or directive of the Inspector General of Police.

Mukan, who spoke through the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni, clarified the officers that went to Nunieh’s residence were from the IGP Monitoring Team in Abuja on official assignment to the state.

Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), made the clarification in a statement on Friday in Port Harcourt.

Recall that Rivers State governor, Nyesome Wike, on Thursday, stopped police operatives from arresting Nunieh at her residence at about 4.am on Thursday.

Omoni said the police operatives were from the Inspector General of Police (I-G) Monitoring Team, with support of the state police command.

Part of the statement read: “The officers, before proceeding to Nunieh’s residence, observed due protocols and requisite standard operating procedures. The Rivers police command wish to clarify that the officers who went to the residence of Nunieh were from the I-G Monitoring Team in Abuja on official assignment to the state.

On arrival, the officers reported to the police command headquarters with their investigation activities duly signed and approved by the commissioner. The reference that police officers went to arrest Nunieh without the directive of the CP and I-G is ridiculous and most unfortunate, and should be disregarded.

Omoni said the mobile policemen in company with the team to arrest of Nunieh, went there on official duty, contrary to some media reports. “Mukan is poised to deliver quality policing services and the command will continue to remain firm, focused and will not be distracted by any consideration.”
