Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Mr. Tony Ojukwu, has called for enforcement of statutory punishment for kidnappers to check incidents of abduction and other acts of criminality.
”The government signed into law, the Safe Schools Declaration( SSD) for children and this is the time to ensure Nigeria fulfilled its obligation under the safe schools Declaration. Our children must be protected from all forms of harm while enjoying their guaranteed rights to education anywhere”, he said in a statement issued by the Commission’s Assistant Director, Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Mrs. Fatimah Agwai-Mohammed, in Abuja.
Ojukwu’s reaction came as armed bandits launched a blistering attack on Government Science School, Kagara, on Wednesday. A student was killed, while 27 students, three teachers of the school and other residents of the community were abducted in the attack.
Recall that barely two months ago, 344 students of the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State, were abducted by gunmen in a late night raid.
