A gang of yet-to-be-identified dare-devil armed men in an unconscionable act intercepted a Sienna bus conveying a dead body on Thursday, May 23.
The gunmen thereafter abducted all the mourners on board a Toyota Hiace bus accompanying the corpse for burial in a convoy of two vehicles.
The incident occurred at about 4.40pm along the Ejule-Aloma road in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Police said the number of mourners abducted from the 18-seater bus and the Sienna had yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report but the kidnappers abandoned the dead body by the roadside.
Scudnews learned that the Sienna conveying the corpse marked ABJ 302 DX and the Toyota Hiace with registration number UKM 142 XA with an inscription, ‘Apa Local Government Benue State’, were believed to be travelling from Abuja to Benue State to bury the deceased when the unexpected happened.
A police source told Scudnews on Friday that the dead body has been evacuated from the vehicle at the crime scene and deposited at the morgue in Ilemona Clinic, Ejule, Kogi State for preservation.
“We have intensified search and rescue operation to rescue passengers in the two vehicles the number of which is yet unknown. That is all I can say about the incident for now”, said a police officer who does not want his name mentioned.
