A 65-year-old man, Imole Akintewe, is to spend five years in jail for committing incest with his two daughters. Justice John Adeyeye of an Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti, gave the verdict on Tuesday.
The judge handed the sentence without an option of fine after holding that the prosecution had proved its case beyond doubt. Prosecution counsel, Felix Awoniyi, had told the court the convict committed the offence on or about May 28, 2019, at Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State capital.
The prosecutor said after the death of his wife, Akintewe started having sex with his two daughters aged nine and 13. He called seven witnesses including a medical doctor and the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) as well as tendered exhibits such as statements of the victims, witnesses, defendant and medical reports, to prove his case.
In his judgment, Justice Adeyeye held that the society abhorred incest and described Akintewe’s act as condemnable. “However, considering the age of the defendant and the fact that he has shown remorse, I will be lenient with him. Hence in this circumstance, the convict is sentenced to five years imprisonment, without an option of fine”.
