Shehu Sani, a former Senator in the 8th National Assembly, has said Nigeria’s population must be higher than estimated figure released by the National Populations commission (NPC).
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central from 2015 to 2019, stated this in a post on his twitter’s handle on monday, 11th January.
He said if 175 million SIMs are now linked to National Identity Numbers (NIN) according to official figures, Nigeria’s population may be much higher than estimated figure which currently stands at 206 million.
“If actually 175 million SIM are now linked to NIN according to official figures then Nigeria’s population may be much higher than estimated,” Sani tweeted.
However, some individuals differed with Shehu Sani’s post as they argued that number of SIMs cannot be used to determine the actual population of Nigeria.
“Car trackers use Sims…. desk phones, modems, many devices use Sims, plenty multiple sims”. one of the twitter users, @fash360degree tweeted.
Scudnews reports that the ongoing registration of NIN to SIM policy by the federal government has generated negative reactions across the country.
Many Nigerians have complained that the rush for NIN registration could further aid the spread of the dreaded Covid-19.
Staff of the National Identity management Council (NIMC) called off its strike today and alot of Nigerians have complained about being unable to get their NIN.
