Police, Army Recover 21 Bodies of Vigilantes Killed by Bandits in Niger

No fewer than 21 members of a vigilante group in Niger State popularly referred to as Yan Sakai by the locals, were gruesomely murdered by armed bandits in an ambush, it was learnt on Thursday.

Sources hinted Scudnews that the incident occurred on Tuesday at Danko village along Kotonkoro-Dutsen Magaji road in Mariga Local Government Area of the state.

A joint security patrol team comprising the police and soldiers recovered 21 bodies of the slain vigilante men on Wednesday, with six of the corpses said to have already decomposed.

The state police command said several of the vigilante men were still being held captive by the bandits in their den, but it had yet to ascertain the number of hostages.

Scudnews further learnt that the charred remains of about 20 motorcycles suspected to belong to the murdered local security men littered the scene.

Police said efforts were ongoing to rescue those held captive.
