The police and operatives of other security agencies have been placed on red alert in Kano State amid fears of a possible outbreak of violent protests following the adoption of a motion by the Kano State House of Assembly to recall the Kano State Emirate Councils Amendment law 2019 and the Kano State Emirate amendment law 2023.
This was sequel to deliberations on the floor of the House during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Alhaji Isma’il Falgore, on Tuesday.
The House had agreed to recall the laws upon which a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II was dethroned, following a motion of urgency and public interest moved by its majority leader, Alhaji Lawan Hussaini during Tuesday’s plenary session presided over by the Speaker Rt. Hon. Jibril Isma’il Falgore.
Hussaini, who is the member representing Dala Constituency, had in the motion sought the permission of the lawmakers to recall the laws for amendment and was seconded by the member representing Dawakin Kudu Constituency, Shu’aibu Rabi’u.
However, top security sources told Scudnews on Wednesday that a red flag was raised in security circles over the ongoing development which was seen to have serious implications including heightening tension and uncertainties among followers of the former Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi 11 and the five incumbent emirs.
It was further learned that the development was viewed as portending grave security implications especially in Kano and Bichi, with a tendency of heightening political tension in the state.
Consequently, the police and operatives of other security agencies in the have been placed on red alert to checkmate or quell possible protests that might erupt over the move by the state Assembly.
A senior security officer, who spoke with Scudnews under anonymity, gave an insight on the red flag. “The development has tendency of further heightening political tension in the state with likelihood of physical counter attacks by both supporters; there may in addition be some sponsored streets protests. Therefore, security men have been directed to be on red alert”.
