The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, office in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, has been gutted by fire.
The office was gutted by a strange midnight fire, on Thursday.
The cause of the inferno is yet to be ascertained but residents of the area, said they suspect electrical spark from one of the poles supplying power to the premise.
It is gathered that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on getting a distress call from the Udenu Council Chairman, Solomon Onah, about the incident, rushed to the scene to screen the level of damage.
The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Daniel Ndukwe, who confirmed this development said “operatives attached to the Udenu Divisional Police Headquarters immediately rushed to the scene of the incident from where they immediately contacted fire service office in the area to promptly put out the fire.
“Preliminary investigation suggests that the fire, which was eventually put out before it could spread to other offices around the building, through the combined effort of the State Fire Service, the Police and other law-abiding citizens, may have been caused by power surge due to sudden power supply to the building”.
Ndukwe further said the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, has ordered the cordoning-off of the scene, even as thorough investigation has been ordered by the police commissioner to further ascertain the actual cause of the infirno.
