Surety Gets N500,000 Bail Over Alleged Failure to Produce Suspect

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday granted bail in the sum of N500, 000 to a 36-year-old man, Lewis Okokonedo, who allegedly failed to produce a suspect he stood as surety for.

The Magistrate, Mrs Ejiro  Kubeinje, also said Okokonedo should produce two sureties in like sum.

Kubeinje ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and have evidence of two years’ tax payment.

The magistrate adjourned the case until December 15 for substantive hearing.

Okokonedo, whose address was not given, was charged with contempt of law.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, ASP Bisi Ogunleye, alleged that the defendant stood as a surety for one Emmanuel Chidiebere charged with conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretences and threat to life.

Ogunleye told the court that the defendant signed an undertaking  to produce the suspect whenever needed but failed to live up to it.

He said the alleged incident took place on October 2 at the Human Right Resource Centre in Ikeja.

The alleged offence contravenes Section 97 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
