Chairman of Obi Local Government Council in Nasarawa State, Muhammed Iyimoga Oyigye has been impeached over alleged corruption and anti-party activities by the legislators.
The councilors took the decision on Monday in Obi, headquarters of the local council.
In an interview with newsmen later in Lafia, the state capital, Speaker of the Council’s legislature, Luka Isiah, said 8 out of10 members were unanimous on the decision to remove the Chairman.
According to him, the chairman was removed for diverting public money to his personal account, executing projects without the approval of the legislators, running the affairs of the Council without involving anybody, among other offences.
A source in Obi who witnessed the incident but does not want his name mentioned, said shortly after the impeachment, some thugs who were displeased by the development, physically assaulted the councilors, forcing them to run for safety.
It was gathered that some of them were thoroughly beaten and left to go home with torn clothes .
When contacted, the embattled chairman said he was just hearing about the news of his impeachment.
It would be recalled that the chairman was last week suspended by his party (APC) at the council level over anti party activities.
Checks indicate that if Iyimoga’s impeachment is sustained, it would be the first of its kind since the returned of democracy in the state in 1999.
