The Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja, has nullified the election of Governor Douye Diri.
This followed a suit filed by the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), which contended that its candidate was unlawfully excluded from participating in the election.
In a split judgment of two to one, the tribunal ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) does not have the power to disqualify a candidate for any election.
The tribunal ordered INEC to conduct a fresh election within 90 days from the day of the ruling, which is however, can be challenged at the Court of Appeal.
