A non-governmental organisation, Women Arise for Change Initiative, has urged security agencies to guard against loss of lives to the forthcoming Edo and Ondo gubernatorial elections.
The group’s President, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, said on Tuesday that perpetrators of election violence in Nigeria should be tried at the International Criminal Court.
She said in a statement issued in Lagos that such a measure would deter security forces from being used to waste innocent lives during elections.
“It is important to let all those who will carry guns during the elections know that their own lives will be on the line for every life wasted”.
Okei-Odumakin expressed sadness at the loss of lives during the last election in Kogi, describing it as painful and unforgettable.
“We cannot forget so soon how innocent souls were wasted during the election. We still carry deep pains in our hearts about the woman who was hacked to death even after the election. We have had enough of beastialities”.
Edo governorship election will take place on Saturday ( September 19) while Ondo gubernatorial election holds on October 10.
