A woman in Jigawa State, Northwest Nigeria on Friday, doused herself with petrol and ignited fire in a bid to commit suicide.
Maimuna Wadaji allegedly chose to take her life in protest of her husband’s reported plan to remarry his former wife.
The bizarre incident occurred at Runguma, a village in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, where the woman resides.
Lawan Shiisu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, and spokesperson for the state police command said police operatives were drafted to the scene following a report on the incident which occurred on August 6.
Giving an insight into the incident, Shiisu said “On Friday, at about 10:00hrs, information was received by the police that one Maimuna Wadaji of Rungumau village, Dutse LGA, attempted suicide, where she bathed with petrol and put fire on herself”.
After setting herself on fire, she shouted and called for help, it was further learnt.
Shiisu said a team of policemen deployed to the scene rescued and rushed her to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, FUTH, Dutse, for treatment.
Scudnews could not ascertain the woman’s state health as of the time of filing this report, but the police said Maimuna would be arraigned on a charge of attempted suicide whenever she was discharged from the hospital.
