Suspected armed  Fulani Herdsmen, on Monday, invaded four council wards in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, with 100 persons feared killed and destroyed several houses.
Chairman of Katsina-Ala local council, Mr. Alfred Atera, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with newsmen.
He said the affected council wards were Yooyo, Utange, Mbaturan/Mberev and Mbayongo.
According to him,  people fled in large numbers as the herdsmen shot sporadically on a killing spree.
“I have videos of the incident. The herdsmen have developed a strategy. They are not attacking one place. If they attack kwaanondo, the next thing you will hear is that, they are attacking Utange. The military are going here and there but before they could get there, the herdsmen have finished and gone to the next point. So, that is the situation in Katsina-Ala. We have reported to all security authorities about what is going on. Am in a meeting with my traditional rulers and putting heads together to see what we can do at our own level.
“I ‘m not suspecting any military connivance but am suspecting bandits, the existing bandits. I think they are trying to get cheap popularity. They are conniving to do that so that we could consider them which we have refused to do. It is better to die by Fulani than allow our boys to kill us. The Gana remnants have connived with herdsmen to cause havoc and unrest in our area”, the council boss lamented”.
When contacted, the Benue State police command Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Catherine Anene said she was yet to receive report on the killings.
The force Commander of Operations Whirl Stroke, Brig. Gen. Clement Apere said that the narrative given was wrong and asked our correspondent to call the Katsina Ala council chairman for further clarification.
