Sources said the latest incident which came barely a week after about 12 suspects escaped from custody at the Zone 5 police headquarters in Benin, the Edo State capital, was amazing as the cell was not broken.

It was learnt that one of the escapee suspects, Victor Oboh, was detained on a court order, while the other, Isa Akhabue, was held for allegedly committing a felony.

A senior police officer who pleaded not to be named, told our reporter that following the circumstances of the escape, the Charge Room Officer (CRO), Writer 1 and the station guards at the Irrua Division on the day of the incident have been arrested and detained.

“It’s a case of negligence for suspects to escape from lawful custody without breaking the cell. Some officers on duty including the station guards have been arrested and undergoing interrogation for appropriate disciplinary action”, he remarked.
