A female police Corporal, Esther Akpan, was reportedly killed on Tuesday, April 28, by yet-to-be-identified gunmen riding on motorcycles who, in a failed bid to attack the Ika Divisional police headquarters in Akwa Ibom State, attacked a police patrol van which was conveying her out of the station.

Reports indicated that also killed was a member of the Ika Community Policing Committee, Isonguyo Paul, who was driving the Volvo patrol van when the incident occurred at about 6.pm, and was also burnt inside the vehicle.

It was learnt that an attempt by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the station, CSP Chris Elderly, who led a team of policemen to rescue the deceased during the attack turned fatal, as he was overpowered by the gunmen who inflicted severe injuries on his head and carted away his AK47 rifle.

A police source who craved anonymity told Scudnews that the critically injured DPO was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, but policemen at the station prevented it from being razed.
