Nasarawa Govt Distributes 1, 500 Mattresses, Beds to Boarding Schools

The Nasarawa State Government has distributed 1, 500 mattresses and 750 double bunk beds to 29 public boarding schools across the state.

Speaking at the distribution on Friday in Lafia, Hajiya Fati Sabo, Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, said the beddings were to enhance conducive accommodation for boarding students across the state.

Sabo also explained that the exercise was in fulfillment of the promises made by Governor Abdullahi Sule, to improve the quality of education in the state.

The Commissioner listed other items distributed to include; 1, 000 insecticide treated nets and text books to the schools.

“We also distributed different food items and ingredients to the boarding schools, as has been the practice every term, for the feeding of students in our boarding schools”.

She noted that the state government had also distributed science and technical equipment, and instructional materials to all 418 public secondary schools, as well as to the private schools.

“The science and technical equipment were distributed to ensure regular practicals with the view to promoting science and technical education in the state”.

The Commissioner noted that the Coronavirus (COVID-19) protocols were being observed in the state as the virus was still very much around.

According to her, the ministry is working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health to cater for the health needs of students.

“We have agreed that students who are sick in the boarding house can be taken to the nearest government medical facility for medical attention. We will also train all health prefects on basic health tips and on how to give first aid”.

In his remarks, Christopher Ogiri, President, All-Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPPS), expressed gratitude to the governor for the timely support to schools.

Ogiri said the gesture would go a long way to ensure efficiency and improved quality of education in the state.

The state in its 2020 budget, allocated 26 per cent to the education sector in compliance with UNESCO’s recommendations.
