A naval officer reportedly went berserk on Sunday in Jos, Plateau State, inflicting life-threatening injuries on his lover after a misunderstanding at about 1.am.

The officer identified as Shehu Muhammed attached to the Operation Save Haven (OPSH) headquarters in Jos, also allegedly stabbed an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Anzaku Enje, who led a team of policemen to the scene in response to a distress call.

Sources said the incident occurred at the West of Mines, a red light district in Jos, the Plateau State capital, where drinking pubs and women of easy virtues lined the streets from dusk to dawn.

It was learnt that the naval officer who was allegedly drunk, had stabbed his lover identified as Ms Lami James on the forehead, resulting in a distress call to a police patrol team.

A witness said on arrival at the scene, the policemen found Lami on the ground in a pool of her blood and attempted to disarm Muhammed. But he reportedly resisted and also stabbed the leader of the police team, ASP Enje on the head.

The witness further said apparently in self defense, the senior police officer shot at the naval officer on the knee to demobilize him, and put a call across to the Divisional Police Officer in charge of ‘A’ Division, Jos, who arrived the scene moments later.

Sources told Scudnews that the DPO eventually contacted a senior army officer attached to the OPSH simply identified as Major Abu who reportedly got to the scene with a military ambulance and conveyed the injured naval officer to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), for treatment.

In the same vein, Lami, a resident of Anglo Jos and ASP Enje were also rushed to the Plateau Specialist Hospital for treatment.

Spokesperson for the Plateau State police command, ASP Ubah Ogaba could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing this report, but a senior police officer who craved for anonymity, confirmed the incident. He said the case was under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
