Buhari Appoints Ibrahim Gambari Chief of Staff

The Presidency has formally announced the appointment of Professor Ibrahim Gambari as the new Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari. The former Minister of External Affairs and seasoned diplomat replaces Mr Abba Kyari, who died of coronavirus complications on April 17, 2020.

A tweet on Presidency Nigeria’s twitter handle, @NGR President, on Wednesday afternoon confirmed the appointment of the Kwara State-born Gambari. “Ibrahim Gambari is the new Chief of Staff to President @MBuhari. He succeeds Abba Kyari, who passed away on April 17, 2020,” the Presidency said on its twitter handle.

The tweet was immediately retweeted by Mr Garba Shehu, @GarShehu, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, who also doubles as the official spokesman of Muhammadu Buhari.

The picture of Prof. Gambari; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapher; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and President Muhammadu Buhari during today’s Federal Executive Council meeting was also tweeted in the Presidency’s twitter handle.

Scudnews had authoritatively  reported yesterday that Prof. Gambari was set to be officially announced today as the new Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari.

 

Professor Gambari served as the Minister for External Affairs between 1984 and 1985.

 

The highly respected scholar was also the Chairman of the United Nations Special Committee Against Apartheid (1990-1994).

 

Gambari was also at the United Nations between 2005 and 2007 where he served as Under-Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Department of Political Affairs.

He is currently the Special Adviser on the International Compact with Iraq and Other Issues for the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
