Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, says the state has shortlisted 18,000 candidates for filling of teaching vacancies in primary and secondary schools and technical colleges.
Arigbabu told newsmen on Wednesday in Abeokuta that 21,000 persons applied for the vacancies. He spoke after monitoring screening of the applicants at the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, adding that of the 18,000 shortlisted candidates, only 5,000 would be employed.
“The Teach Intervention Programme of the state government will help to improve teaching and learning. The process started with online registration where 18,000 candidates were shortlisted for the screening test which took place in four centres across the state.
“This is the first test. It allows candidates to sit for the computer-based test after which successful ones will go through the second stage, which is oral interview. After the oral interview, we will pick candidates that will be fit to teach in our schools.”
He said a major criterion for the recruitment was that applicants must be graduates of education or possess post-graduate diploma in education, higher national diploma in education or National Certificate of Education.
According to Arigbabu, education remains the bedrock of any development and competent teachers are needed for desired results. Some of the applicants commended the state government for the initiative and thanked God for the recruitment process.
The recruitment is under the Ogun State Teaching Experience Acquisition Channel (Ogun TEACh). According to the state government, the programme is a special intervention scheme designed to fill vacancies in the state public primary/secondary schools and technical colleges.
The government said teachers recruited through the scheme would work for two years during which they would be given stipends monthly before being given permanent employments.
