A 100-year-old woman was murdered in Benue State on Friday, January 29, in cold blood at her home under the cover of darkness by a yet-to-be identified assailant who chopped off her tongue and disappeared with it from the crime scene.

The macabre act described as a murder mystery, is under investigation by homicide detectives at the Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of the Benue State police command who are puzzling over the motive for the crime.

The deceased, identified as Madam Oyiyagu Ocheme, was found dead in her room on the ill-fated day by her son, James Ocheme, who had visited her home at about 7.am to check on her.

To be sure, her shrill cries for help were too faint to alarm neighbours as her assailant snuffed life out of her in a macabre display of professional dexterity at Okpafie, a suburb of Ugbokolo in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State.

James Ocheme, who walked into his mother’s home to behold her lifeless body, reported the bizarre crime to the police at Ugbokolo Division, where the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) reportedly led a patrol team to the scene and evacuated the centenarian’s body to the morgue at Bethel Hospital Ugbokolo, for autopsy.

Benue State Commissioner of Police, Mukadas Mohammed Garba, while confirming the incident to Scudnews on telephone, said a discreet investigation was ongoing and the public would be informed on the outcome. “We are still on the investigation and immediately we reach a conclusion, we shall notify members of the public on the outcome”, he assured on the telephone.
