2022 FCT Council Polls: 400 Candidates Jostle For Positions

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says fourteen out of eighteen political parties have nominated Four Hundred and Seventy Two (472) candidates for Sixty Eight (68) elective positions in next year’s Area Councils Election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu stated this Thursday in Abuja during a meeting with Chairmen of registered Political parties on the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) scheduled to commence later this month across the country.

Yakubu who expressed his displeasure over noncompliance with party constitutions in the nomination of candidates by some political parties urged party leaders to always allow the Will of members to prevail to avoid litigations after Elections.

He commended the contributions of political parties towards the just concluded conversion of Voting Points (PVs) to Polling Units (PUs) as Seven Hundred and Forty-Nine (749) PUs were relocated to appropriate public facilities for easy access of voters across the country.

The INEC boss however urged them to use the available information of the One Hundred and Seventy Six Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty Six (176, 846) PUs across the country to plan for future elections.

But in his remark, National Chairman, Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) Dr. Leonard Nzenwa expressed disatisfaction over the destruction of INEC property in some parts of the country and called on leaders of political parties to support INEC in strengthening Democratic System in the country.

Ezenwa however commended INEC for breaking the twenty five (25) years jinx in the creation and expansion of Polling Units in the country and pledged the Council’s resolve to support initiatives that would enhance Democractic Governance in Nigeria.
