Three days after the gruesome murder of Mr. Azuibike Ekwegbalu, a Senior Special Assistant on Security to the Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano, emerging facts indicated that the suspect allegedly found and arrested at the scene of crime by the police on the day of the incident was a female friend of the deceased.

Recall that while confirming the incident, Haruna Mohammed, a Superintendent of Police (SP) and spokesperson for the state police command, had said in a statement on Sunday, that “one suspect who allegedly was in the premises has been arrested and the case is under investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Investigations by our reporter has revealed the identity of the suspect as Ms Adaeze Nwokike, a 27-year-old woman resident at plot 372 Efab Queens Estate, Gwarimpa, Abuja, said to be a friend of the late Ekwegbalu. She was on a visit to him at Awka when the incident occurred.

Sources close to the Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of the Anambra State police command hinted Scudnews that it was indeed, the woman who reported the crime to the police at about 1.30am on the ill-fated day.

Adaeze, it was learnt, had reported at the police ‘B’ Division in Awka that she was on a visit to the deceased from Abuja and was woken from sleep at his Commissioners’ Quarters apartment on the day of the incident as a result of a fight between her friend and an unknown man in the room.

Following the report, a police team deployed to the scene reportedly found Ekwegbalu, aged 43, lying in a pool of blood and a blood stained table knife on the floor. It was further learnt that the team observed marks of violence on his stomach, back and neck, but did not observe any sign of breaking into the apartment.

Consequently, the police arrested Adaeze, who hails from Ngodo Nise, Awka South, to clear the fog on the circumstances of the crime as homicide detectives at the SCID battle to unmask the perpetrators.

Ekwegbalu was stabbed to death by yet-to-be-identified assailants in the early hours of Sunday, August 9.
